This week I want you to be encouraged as you raise your children, nurture your marriage, and keep the dozen other plates spinning in your life. I imagine you are like the teachers and me in that you often feel inadequate and incompetent for the tasks God has set before you. We all have this sense as parents, teachers have it daily in the classroom, and I have it as a headmaster. The solution to incompetence and inadequacy is first to acknowledge our need of grace, wisdom, and ability. We, like Peter when he first encountered Christ, cry out “I am a sinful man, O Lord.” (Luke 5:8) We must be truthful about ourselves, our sinfulness, and our need of help and then, secondly, look to Him for strength. Also, like Peter, we trust in His precious promises. We, by faith, look to Him and trust Him that “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises…” I’m pretty sure helping your children with math homework, managing your home, and being patient with your spouse falls under the category of “all things that pertain to life and godliness.” He has given us all we need. His promises are indeed precious AND very great.
